Flossing helps remove food and plaque from between teeth where almost 20% of cavities occur and provides better saliva access to dilute sugars, neutralise acid and repair demineralised tooth. While dental floss, a nylon thread held between the fingers of each hand, is generally used to clean between teeth other devices like toothpicks, floss holders and foam strips are also used. The left photo shows food dye on a Brush"n"floss foam strip that is applied to teeth to highlight plaque at gum margins.
On the right the foam strip in the School Kit flosses between teeth after removing plaque from gum margins under finger pressure.
The foam is compressed between the thumb and a finger of each hand to fit between teeth. The foam will tear or break before it will injure gums and even young children can safely learn flossing skills of front teeth, with relative ease.

Almost all cavities occur where food is trapped between teeth and inside pits and fissures in grooves on chewing surfaces where the brush cannot reach after every meal or snack. It is desirable to reduce trapped food on teeth after every meal or snackOther Links.
